The Bluebirds in our series were real women. Clare Gass inspired the award-winning play Vimy, and both she and Edith Monture a Mohawk nurse who was forced to go to the US so that she could be on the front to care for her boys, inspired Vern’s latest play Bluebirds. Their stories have come to life in the work of Governor General’s Award-winning playwright, and series creator Vern Thiessen. Together he and Co-writer and Producer, Amy Tefrey, breathe light back to these women, these Bluebirds, who were brave and flawed and struggled through the Great War.
We are at a moment parallel to that time. Our front-line nurses face a world pandemic, a world turning to nationalism and divisiveness, and yes, utter exhaustion.
But they fight on.
The Great War destroyed bodies and minds.
